Goodwill Rebounds from Dash Crash To Take Feature Win
by Debbie Shipherd

Chowchilla, Ca August 21......David Goodwill of Napa won the 20 lap feature at Chowchilla Speedway’s 1/3 mile track on Saturday night, overpowering Ramos Oil's Gary Koster on lap 17 and taking the checkered flag with Koster and Oakhurst’s Doug Gandy close behind. Goodwill was involved in a frightening three car tangle in the trophy dash where Ed Amador barrel rolled seven times, Keith Shipherd went end over end four times, and Goodwill flipped. All of the drivers were all right, the Amador and Goodwill cars were repaired in time for the main event, but Shipherd’s car was destroyed. Veteran driver Gary Koster of Woodland won his first trophy dash in a wingless sprint, and was ecstatic.

Twelve NCMA wingless sprints were divided into two heat races. Heat one featured first time driver Doug Gandy, Jr. driving his father’s car, and he drove smoothly and had fun.Kaeding Performance's Goodwill took the win with Contra Costa Auto Part's Shipherd second. Heat two was won by J & J Dairy's Amador followed by Koster and OCR ’s Burt Siverling. The trophy dash began with Koster taking the lead from a pole start, followed by Shipherd, Goodwill, and Amador. On lap two Shipherd, Goodwill and Amador ran three abreast coming out of turn four, and suddenly they were airborne, flipping and rolling in front of the flagstand. Chowchilla’s promoter Tom Sagmillar, track officials, NCMA officials, and the ambulance crews all did a professional job of quickly responding and attending to the drivers involved. While the Amador and Goodwill teams made repairs, the Lavell, Hammond, and Mehalas teams assisted the Shipherd crew, and promoter Cindy Sagmillar made follow up checks on the drivers as well. The generous Chowchilla fans collected almost $300.00 in a rollover fund that was divided between the three drivers.

Gary Koster took the lead at the green in the 20 lap feature, and the action slowed early into the race for a spun car. Several laps later Amador spun in turn 3 for another caution. Koster continued his lead after the restart, followed by Gandy, Randy Jones Construction's Jimmy Lavell, and Goodwill. Lavell’s broken drag link brought out a caution, and Manteca ’s Michael Zarevich was flagged off the track after his second spin. Goodwill charged into the lead on lap 17, and was followed to the checkers by Koster and Doug Gandy. The NCMA Sprints will be racing again on Saturday, August 28 at Altamont ’s ½ mile paved track. Drive safe, have fun, and take care.
