Altamont, Ca...July 31... Don Hicks of Patterson won his
first feature of the season at Altamont Motorsports Park on Saturday
July 31, leading the entire 20 lap race from green to checkers, just
a week after celebrating his 70th birthday.
In his 55th year of racing, Hicks proved he is still a force to
be reckoned with as he led the race flawlessly and powered his
Design Mobile Systems car to the checkers, followed closely by
Steve's Constuction's Pat Ariaz and J & J Dairy's Ed Amador of
Modesto.
Fast qualifier TBS's Scott Holloway took the trophy dash honors in a
fast, caution free race, and won the heat race as well, with Ariaz
and Amador rounding out the top three. In true NCMA fashion, driver
Jimmy Lavell of Brentwood came out to share his wealth of asphalt
experience and help out a few drivers, and his expertise was
welcomed especially by new asphalt driver Rob Hammond, who managed
to qualify with his first under 20 second lap time.
Under the light of a full moon, Altamont's fierce winds howled as
spectactors in the pits donned ski caps, parkas, and goggles to view
the races. The 20 lap NCMA sprint feature began with rookie driver
John Silva from Tracy and veteran driver Don Hicks on the front row.
At the drop of the green, Hicks took the lead followed by Ariaz,
Silva, and Amador.
A yellow came out for a spun car in the infield on lap 3, and
Hicks continued to lead after the restart. The "Rim Rider"
Scott Holloway made an outside pass on Amador to take over 4th on
lap five. On the 7th circuit, Silva and Holloway met with
unfortunate contact with the wall in turn 2. Both drivers were
unharmed but their cars too damaged to continue racing. The front
pack led a tight bumper to bumper formation with Hicks leading in
front of Ariaz, Amador, and Contra Costa Auto Part's Keith
Shipherd.
In just his 3rd feature race at Altamont, Hale Lumber's Rob
Hammond ran in the 5th spot and kept a smooth line. With only 5 laps
to go, OCR's Burt Siverling pulled into the infield as he ran out of
fuel. Amador attempted to challenge Ariaz for the 2nd spot but was
unable to overtake him, and as the checkered flag flew, it was Don
Hicks, Ariaz, and Amador in the top 3.
The NCMA sprints will have a welcome week off and then will return
to Watsonville Speedway's 1/4 mile clay oval on Friday August 13 for
round 5 of the West Coast Select Series. All non winged, carbureted
sprints are welcome to run in the series races, and membership is
not required.
Drive safe, have fun, and take care.
