Chowchilla, Ca...July 17... Kaeding Performance's David
Goodwill of won his 5th NCMA feature at Chowchilla Speedway on
Saturday July 17 from a pole start and led the
entire 20 lap race. A 1st lap pileup unfortunately eliminated three
of the NCMA's front runners, and Ramos Oil's Gary Koster charged
hard to challenge Goodwill for the lead but couldn't overtake him.
Goodwill was followed closely to the checkers by Koster and J &
J Dairy's Ed Amador.
A 12 car field of Spec Sprints made the tow to Chowchilla's 1/3 mile
track, including visitor Jeff Rose from Livermore. All of the NCMA
teams donated items to give away to the Chowchilla fans, and
throughout the evening's program the roar of the crowd could be
heard in the pits as fans won an array of items including two
children's bikes, frisbees,
footballs, stuffed animals, electric toothbrushes, autographed NCMA
t-shirts and hats. The first heat race was won by Ed Amador followed
closely by Gary Koster and Wadco Trenching's George Terry. Contra
Costa Auto Parts' Keith Shipherd won the second heat with David
Goodwill and Jeff Rose behind him.
Chowchilla's pits were full with a good turnout of cars in all
divisions, which combined with the high daytime temperatures took
it's toll on the track, in spite of frequent waterings. As the NCMA
Sprints took the green for the 20 lap main, Goodwill took the lead
from his pole start with Gary Koster, Ed Amador, Keith Shipherd, and
California Auto Sales' Jim Janssen behind him. Amador got sideways
in turn 2, Shipherd braked and spun to avoid contact, and Janssen
and Ramos Oil's Jimmy Lavell braked and piled in behind. George
Terry launched off of Lavell and literally leap frogged over the
tops of the 3 parked cars, amazingly came down on all fours, and
continued driving on the track. Lavell, Shipherd, and Janssen were
all eliminated with considerable damage to their cars, and the high
flying Terry was extremely lucky and unscathed.
On the restart, Goodwill led with Koster challenging him at every
opportunity. Pizza Factory's Doug Gandy pitted with fuel problems
but made it back out to race a lap later. Michael Zarevich's spin
out slowed the action on lap 7, and Hale Lumber's Rob Hammond
smoothly negotiated through traffic from his 10th spot, passing
George Terry for 4th on lap
12. As the clock struck the 11PM curfew the checkered flag flew on
lap 20 for David Goodwill, with Gary Koster and Ed Amador rounding
out the top 3.
In the after race tech, visitor Jeff Rose unfortunately was
disqualified from his 5th place finish when his carburetor failed to
meet the basic Spec Sprint guidelines. The pits were filled with
happy fans armed with the goodies they had won, waiting for their
favorite drivers to sign autograph sheets. The NCMA Sprints will be
racing next at Altamont on
Saturday July 24, and July 31. Friday, August 13 will be the 5th
race in the West Coast Select Series at Watsonville Speedway and all
Spec Sprints are welcome to compete on the fun 1/4 mile track. Drive
safe, have fun, and take care.
