Chowchilla, CA June 12...David Goodwill of Napa
drove his Kaeding Performance Spec Sprint to a 3rd NCMA feature win
on Saturday, June 12 at Chowchilla Speedway,
slipping by Calif. Auto Sales' Jim Janssen on lap 10 and later
headed off the hard charging J & J Dairy's Ed Amador. This was
Goodwill's 2nd victory on the fast 1/3 mile track, after his last
win at Reno Fernley in early May. Ed Amador, Jim Janssen, OCR's Burt
Siverling, and Contra Costa Auto Parts' Keith Shipherd rounded out
the top 5.
The 8 lap heat races began with an awesome 3 wide challenge for the
lead in heat 1 with Amador, Siverling, and Shipherd cleanly running
neck and neck down the back stretch. Ed Amador emerged the victor
followed by Shipherd and Outlaw Signs' Charlie Correia. Heat 2 ran
flag to flag with All Auto Smog and Repairs' Doug Gandy taking the
win in front of
Goodwill and Janssen. Mehalas finished 6th and was thrilled to
finish the race as he has been fighting mechanical problems this
season.
The 4 lap trophy dash was an intense, edge of the seat breath
holder with 3 quick lead changes in the 1st half lap alone. Pole
starter David Goodwill took the lead at the green, Shipherd charged
by him, then Amador dove to the front. Amador held the lead while
Goodwill and Shipherd dueled and swapped positions on every lap. As
the checkered
flag flew, it was Amador taking the win, followed closely by 420
Garage's Shipherd, Goodwill, and Oakhurst's Doug Gandy.
A fully inverted field for the 20 lap feature put Hayward's Dale
Mehalas and Wadco Trenching's George Terry on the front row. A stuck
throttle in Mehalas' car sent him spinning off the track in turn 1,
and another caution ensued when George Terry's steering arm broke
which resulted in unfortunate damage to Ramos Oil's Jimmy Lavell and
Gandy. On the restart, Janssen took the lead followed by Goodwill
and Hale Lumber's Rob Hammond. The dry slick track proved to be a
challenge for some drivers, with the action slowing for 2 spins, and
patience paid off when Goodwill slipped by the smooth running
Janssen around lap 10. Goodwill maintained the lead while back
starters Amador and Shipherd deftly weaved through traffic, and at
the checkers, it was Goodwill, Amador,
Janssen, Siverling, and Shipherd in the top 5.
The NCMA gave away Ramos Oil hats, Pizza Factory frisbees, and
driver autograph sheets to the Chowchilla fans. Special thanks to
Jimmy Lavell, Doug Gandy, and their sponsors for the generous
donations. NCMA Sprints will return for more racing action at
Altamont's fast 1/2 mile paved track on Saturday, June 19, and again
on June 26.
After the feature at Chowchilla, the NCMA teams received the news
about fellow Spec Sprint driver Brandi Ford's unfortunate accident
and fire at Antioch. In the racing family, word travels fast, and we
are relieved to hear she's okay, and offer our sincerest hopes for a
quick recovery. +Drive safe, have fun, and take care.
