Lakeport, CA ...May 22....Contra Costa Auto Parts' Keith
Shipherd won the 30 lap feature at Lakeport Speedway's fast 1/4 mile
paved track on Saturday, May 22, taking the lead from Steve
Amador on lap 10, and holding off the hard charging Scott Holloway
to take the win, with TBS's Holloway and J & J Dairy's Ed Amador
close behind. This was Shipherd's 2nd race at Lakeport Speedway and
his 1st '04 season win. OCR's Burt Siverling celebrated his 1st
trophy dash win on an asphalt track, and both Siverling and Shipherd
won their heat races.
Lakeport Speedway's promoters, Bob and Nadine Strauss, were awarded
the 2003 Promoter of the Year title, and their professional
attention to detail and warm hospitality was enjoyed by all of the
NCMA Spec Sprint teams for this annual visit. The sprints were set
up in a reserved pit area called Legend Land, complete with shade
trees and electrical power hook ups. Race program schedules were
distributed to all the teams and a special driver's meeting was held
for the visitors to answer questions. Track officials also allowed
new sprint driver Rob Hammond of Morgan Hill to take a private hot
lap session for his 1st experience racing on an asphalt track.
The NCMA action began heating up when TBS's Scott Holloway bested
the '03 track record in qualifying with a new season record of
12.601 on the large 1/4 mile track. The 1st 10 lap heat race went
flag to flag with Shipherd taking the win from a back row start,
followed by Manteca's Michael Zarevich. Dash winner Burt Siverling
won the 2nd caution free heat from a front row start, with Ed Amador
hot on his tail.
The 30 lap feature began with Amador Farms' Steve Amador and the
Contra Costa Auto Parts/ 420 Garage car of Keith Shipherd on the
front row. At the green, Steve Amador charged into the lead followed
by Shipherd, Ed Amador, and Siverling, while a battle for the 5th
spot ensued between Holloway and Manteca's Pat Ariaz.By lap 3, Hale
Lumber's Hammond had smoothly moved up 2 spots from his back row
start. Shipherd made an
outside pass on Steve Amador on lap 10 to take the lead. A single
caution flew on lap 15 when Ariaz pulled into the infield, and then
Hammond spun safely in a cloud of smoke as his motor unfortunately
blew.Steve Amador pitted with steering problems, and Holloway and Ed
Amador began pressuring Shipherd for the lead. As the next 15 laps
ticked away,
Shipherd held his smooth line to take the lap 30 checkers followed
closely by Holloway and Amador.
The NCMA teams chipped in to buy a club T-shirt and hat for their #1
fan, 9 year old Robert Hartzo of Lakeport, and signed autograph
sheets for the kids visiting in the pits. All of the teams were
grateful for the opportunity to enjoy Lakeport's hospitality and
fast track, and will have a short break, returning to Chowchilla
Speedway on Saturday, June
12. Have fun, drive safe, and take care.
