July 22,
2006 – West Valley, UT. …Jimmy Wysong led every lap
but that fact is far from indicative of how hard Wysong had to work
to win the USAC Western Sprint Car feature event Saturday night at
Rocky Mountain Raceways. Once a year the USAC Western series drivers
invade Utah to battle with the RMR competitors. And for the second
year in-a-row Wysong thrilled the partisan packed house with a
victory.
“This is a dream come true”, said the happy
winner immediately following his 50-lap triumph that saw him running
laps below the track record. “Those laps don’t count as a track
record so that doesn’t mean squat” said the defending champion
of USAC’s Rocky Mountain Region.
However, it was crucial that Wysong’s #1 was
working so well considering that California’s Brian McClish turned
the fastest lap of the race with a 13.953 second time. McClish was
reeling in Wysong who led from the green flag from his inside front
row starting spot.
The race climaxed on lap 44 when a charging
second-place McClish was forced to lift off the throttle in turn
four as Wysong drifted up the track under heavy pressure. McClish
lost the runner-up position to Ryan Burdett but the two drivers
mounted one more challenge to Wysong in thick traffic on the last
tour of the ½-mile paved oval. The charge came up short as Wysong
crossed the finish line .126 seconds ahead of Burdett, and McClish.
Tony Hunt set quick-time for the meet in
time-trials with a lap of 14.157 seconds. Jimmy Waters, Shauna Hogg,
and Wysong were heat race winners. Hunt won the semi-main.
The USAC Western Sprint Cars will appear next
at Altamont MotorSports Park in Tracy, CA Saturday July 29, 2006.
