. …Destiney Hays never
had much fun in
Las Vegas
in her previous visits. She was under 21 years-old which pretty much
eliminates any possibility of a good time in the adult
Disneyland
in the desert. Now her perspective is changed for good. Of age, and
racing for the first time in Vegas as a 21 year-old, Hays won the
United States Auto Club (USAC) Western States Sprint Car feature
event Saturday night at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring.
Driving the family owned, Hays Equipment Rentals #28, she inherited
the lead on lap 21 of 40 when Tim Barber broke while at the point.
Hays then withheld the challenges of Robert Beck to win the Orleans
Hotel and Casino sponsored event.
“I just wanted to be as smooth as
possible,” said Hays, after thanking her parents, and crew. “We
had a lot of good luck tonight.”
Michael Trimble finished third, Brian McClish
was fourth, and Jimmy Waters completed the top five in the 20-car
A-Main. Brad Bumgarner, Michael Lewis, and Tim Barber were heat race
winners, while Tony Hunt won the B-Main. Hunt regained the points
lead over teammate and defending series champion, Michael Lewis.
Lewis was challenging Barber for the race lead on lap 17 when his
racer suddenly took ill and dropped from the competition. Hunt
posted quick-time at 13.985 seconds in one of three Western Speed
Racing entrants.
The series has only two remaining events.
Rounds 14 and 15 are set for November 20th, and 25th
respectively. The Old Pueblo Classic at
Tucson
Raceway
Park
will serve as the penultimate race, with Irwindale Speedway’s
Turkey Night wrapping up the season for the colorful and fast sprint
cars.
