WARMERDAM, REEVES AND TARR POST KINGS SPEEDWAY WINS
by Gary Jacob

Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Hot Stocks

Hanford, CA -June 30, 2001--Dedicating the win to new son Austin Jerome, Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car point leader Jerome Warmerdam from Hanford captured the 25 lap feature Saturday night at Kings Speedway. It was Warmerdam's third try at winning for the new son, but it was his fourth win in six 2001 starts. He started on the pole, lost the lead to Greg Porte for a single lap and then paced the remainder of the race. Fast timer Jarrett Chaney ran second over Porte and Davey Pombo. Laton's Jimmy Reeves had to pit with a flat tire on lap 2, but he got the rubber changed and then picked off the field one by one before taking the lead from Rodney Freitas on lap 18 of the 25 lap IMCA Modified main event. Reeves is the defending track champion and the crash filled race saw only 7 of the 18 starters running at the checkered flag. Freitas finished second ahead of Chad Patterson and Joe Chapman. Rick Tarr from Coalinga made it three wins in four starts in the shortened 20 lap Hot Stock main event. He had taken the lead from Ken Noland on lap 5 and was glad to see the early checkered flag as his oil pressure light had been on for four laps.Tony Contente finished second over Noland.

The combining of the Hanford and Santa Maria classes has breathed new life into the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car class. Chaney led a 22 car field in time trials with his 16.067 lap that just nipped the 16.068 of Porte. Gene Manhire ran a 16.200, Santa Maria dominator Jimmy Thompson a 16.312 and Warmerdam a 16.393. The field was split into four heat races. Former Ventura regular Steve Conrad won the first heat over Chaney and Warmerdam. Josh Ford took heat 2 over Porte and Matt Day. Jason Yount won heat 3 with Wade Griest second. D Pombo won heat 4 over Jason Montgomery. Since Manhire ran last in his heat, the four car inversion for the feature put Warmerdam on the front row with Thompson. Porte led the first lap before Warmerdam took over. Chaney also got around Porte to finish second. Porte ran third over D Pombo, Thompson, New Zealand's Greg Keegan, Yount, Manhire, Griest and Day.

The 21 IMCA Modifieds were split into three heat races. Both Ed Nichols and Tom Stidham broke in hot laps. Patterson won the first heat over Eddie Stewart, Jeff Heusdens beat Reeves in heat 2 and Tom Bowser captured heat 3 with Freitas second. Bryan Burnes also scratched to leave a 18 car field for the 25 lap feature. Reeves was in the second row for the start, but he blew a tire for a lap 2 yellow flag. He restarted in the rear and slowed advanced through the field as Freitas set the pace. Reeves passed Freitas for the top spot on lap 18 and won the 25 lapper over Freitas, Patterson, Chapman, Chowchilla point leader Paul Stone, Dana Garvin, Richard Vandersteen, Bowser and Edward Slocum. Usual Merced racer Marcus Aue gave Kings a try and ran 16th with Bakersfield Speedway regulars Troy Morris Jr and Buck Cox settling for 12th and 18th.

There were 13 Hot Stocks and they were placed in a pair of qualifying heat races. Claudine Contente won the first heat over T Contente and Dave Bush. Paul Pelletier won the second heat over Alice Hotchkiss and K Noland. Tarr was just 6th in his heat race. He lined up 9th in the main event, was third after three laps and passed K Noland for the lead on lap 5. Despite the late race oil pressure worries, Tarr won for the third time in 4 starts on the 3/8 mile clay oval in the former Jason Selvidge car. T Contente ran second over Noland, J T Contente, Bush, fellow Coalinga resident Paul Pelletier and C Contente.
