Hanford, CA -October 7, 2000--For the second straight
week, Tommy Tarlton charged from 10th starting after setting fast time
to win a 30 lap feature for the California Rebel Cup winged 360 sprint
cars Saturday night at Kings Speedway. Tarlton spends most of his time
in the winged 410 sprint car action, but the late September-October
race calendar listed no 410 races and numerous 360 events so he has
returned to his roots. Series point leader and defending champion
Monte Faccinto had to come through the B Main which he won and then
scrambled to a second place A Main finish ahead of Craig Smith and
Lawrence Edlund. The Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars finished their
season and Gene Manhire won his third main event, but first since
early June. A J Burgin finished off his championship season with a 7th
place finish. The Champ Trucks that normally race at Perris Auto
Speedway visited Kings Speedway for the second time in 2000 and former
dirt late model ace Todd Cunningham raced to the main event win in
front of Mike Hixson and fast timer Cap Pidgeon.
The Rebel Cup Series continues to be the only winged 360 sprint car racing on the schedule here late in the year and another great 33 car field entered. Tarlton's fast time effort was a 13.933 lap on the 3/8 mile clay oval. Lawrence Edlund ran 13.953, Tim Worth a 14.043, Faccinto a 14.121 and Smith a 14.193. The big field was split into four heats and each advanced the top four finishers into the 30 lap A Main. Stan Yockey beat close friend Tarlton in heat 1, Luke Bebereia and Danny Faria Jr were 1-2 in heat 2, long tow Steven Tiner took heat 3 ahead of Dean Nelson and Mike Schriver was the 4th heat winner over Gary Ferravanti Jr. Faccinto and Ricci Faria ran 5-6 in the 4th heat, so they had to race the B Main that transferred the final six cars into the 30 lapper. Faccinto won that event ahead of R Faria, Garrett Ishii, Mark Barroso, Ron Myska and Davey Key. The 30 lap feature had a ten car inversion, but Tarlton was still able to climb forward from that 5th row start to win ahead of Faccinto, Smith, Edlund, Bebereia, D Faria Jr, Petaluma's Jim VanLare, Myska, Barroso and Schriver. The Bandit car counts have dipped in recent events and 8 cars were on hand this night including Ventura ace Clark Templeman III, who is serving a suspension there. Series champion Burgin set fast time with his 16.023. Manhire ran a 16.289, Brenden Olsen a 16.611 and John Burnett a 16.620. They raced a single heat race and Manhire won ahead of Burnett, Burgin and Greg Keegan. Manhire then won the 20 lap main event ahead of Olsen, Brian Schuler, Keegan and J R Brown. The Champ Trucks brought an 11 truck field from their Southern California homes. They were given time trials this time and former dirt late model racer Pidgeon posted the fastest run at 19.363 seconds. Jack Dodd ran a 19.600 lap and Cunningham a 20.110. They were split into a pair of heat races and Pidgeon won the first in front of Art Peterson and Cunningham. Hixson took heat 2 with Dino Napier second over Cary Cecil. In their 20 lap feature, it was Cunningham gaining another win as Hixson ran second over Pidgeon, Napier, Dodd, Cecil, Peterson and Santa Maria's David Schuyler.
