BEBEREIA, WARMERDAM AND JOHNSON WIN AT KINGS SPEEDWAY
by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprints, Unwinged 360 Sprints and IMCA Modifieds

Hanford, CA -August 19, 2000--Taking advantage of the late race engine woes of Craig Stidham, Luke Bebereia from Tulare made it two feature wins in August and 4 in year 2000 as he captured the California Rebel Cup 30 lapper for the winged 360 sprint cars Saturday night at Kings Speedway. Fast timer Bebereia was trailed at the checkered flag by series point leader Monte Faccinto and previous week winner Tim Worth. The August 19 race was originally scheduled for Bakersfield, but moved back to Hanford just a one ago. Jerome Warmerdam continued his complete domination of the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car events at the track by capturing the non-stop 20 lapper after earlier posting fast time and winning his heat race. Second fast Gene Manhire captured the other heat and ran second in the main event. Mike Johnson from Clovis again made a bid to break open a tight track point race in the IMCA Modifieds by posting his 19th feature win in an incredible year 2000 campaign. He gained the lead in the feature when surprise visitor Joe Carr clipped an infield tire and broke his front end while leading. The Carr car had been driven to a heat race win by Watsonville ace Bobby Hogge.

The rescheduled Rebel action drew a 13 car field and Bebereia was fast timer with a 14.212 effort as Lawrence Edlund ran a 14.347, Mike Schriver a 14.400 and Worth a 14.429. Faccinto was fifth fast and won the first heat ahead of Ron Myska and David Key. In a borrowed car, Kurt Nelson won the second heat ahead of Worth and Stidham. Stidham was sixth fast and sprinted away in the 30 lap main, but his engine soured with just a couple laps remaining and Bebereia inherited the win ahead of Faccinto, Worth, Edlund, Stan Greenberg, Myska, Key and Schriver. Mark Barroso trailered after time trials and the newest pair of the drivers to move over from the Modified Midget action, Scott Coffman and Cody Bogan finished at the back of the 12 car main event.

The Bandits had just a 9 car field and Warmerdam was quick qualifier at 16.100. Manhire ran 16.190 and series point leader A J Burgin was a distant third quick at 16.477. Warmerdam and Burgin ran 1-2 in the first heat and Manhire won heat 2 with Brian Schuler in second. The 20 lapper ran without a yellow flag and the fast timers all made it to the front as Warmerdam won ahead of Manhire, Burgin, Brenden Olsen, Matt Day and Bobby Davis Jr.

The IMCA Modifieds had a 19 car turnout and the Carr entry was a brand new car making it's debut. The car is ticketed to go to the Boone SuperNationals with Hogge driving as Bobby Hogge IV will be wheeling the JDK GRT Chassis mount in the same event. Johnson won his heat ahead of Charles Paul. Jeff Heusdens won heat 2 with Friday night Chowchilla winner Paul Stone second. Johnson had run second behind Stone in Chowchilla. Hogge came from the rear to win heat 3 with previous week feature winner Tom Stidham second. Bob Hotchkiss was the only feature scratch. Johnson started 10th in the main event, was fifth in just 2 laps and 2nd by lap 8. He was chasing down leader Carr when Carr clipped an infield tractor tire and lost his steering. Johnson led the rest of the way with Wayne Coffman finishing 2nd ahead of Chad Patterson, Joe Chapman, Ray Arena, Ed Nichols, Rex Porterfield and Stidham. Jimmy Reeves' hopes of defending his track championship took a severe blow when he only managed a 14th in the feature. Charles Paul finished the race in third, but was disqualified for refusing an engine claim and Royce Patterson was also disqualified from his IMCA Modified debut finish as a teammate to Heusdens in the second Allen Ennis car.
