by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars and Hot Stocks

Hanford, CA -July 29, 2000--Becoming the third straight first time feature winner on the traveling California Rebel Cup Sprint Car Series, famed Central California race car builder Stan Yockey outdueled defending series champion Monte Faccinto and Luke Bebereia to win Saturday night's 30 lap feature for the winged 360 sprint cars at Kings Speedway. Besides building and racing modified midgets and mini sprints, Yockey has crewed for friend Tommy Tarlton's great 410 sprint car season and recently added the ride in the winged 360 sprint car to his slate. The Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars ran an all green feature and Jerome Warmderdam completed a clean sweep with his 6th win of the 2000 season and third straight at Kings. He also had fast time and won his heat with second fast Gene Manhire also winning a heat and placing second in the 20 lap main event. Craig Fromme won his second 20 lap Hot Stock main event with rookie Rick Tarr in second. Ironically, both of C Fromme's wins have come the race after his son Shawn Fromme wins.

For the second straight Kings race, the Rebel Sprint cars had a big turnout with 26 cars in action. Lawrence Edlund was fast timer at 14.227, San Jose's Craig Smith ran a 14.387 and Faccinto a 14.470. Ricci Faria skipped the Golden State Challenge Series race in Bakersfield and instead put a 360 into his car and returned to his Kings Speedway roots with fourth fast time of 14.505. Both Craig Stidham and Tim Worth turned 14.538 laps. The cars were split into four qualifying heats with the top four in each advancing into the 30 lap A Main. Erik Folger beat Bebereia and Yockey in heat 1. San Jose area racer Brad Rieben took heat 2 with Smith and Andy Ferris in the top 3. Faccinto beat Merced's Mark Barroso in heat 3 and another San Jose long tow Greg Yanazzo won heat 4 with Davey Key and Shane Travoli in the top 3. Several top runners missed the transfer and the B Main saw Stidham the winner ahead of Kurt Nelson and Keith Day. John Giffin took the final transfer slot and just missing were rookie Jeff Botelho and previous week Bakersfield winner Danny Faria Jr. Garrett Ishii, Stan Greenberg and fast timer Edlund also failed to get into the 30 lap A Main while Steve Scheidt elected to switch from Bandit to Rebel action and was 8th in the B Main. Yockey won the 20 car A Main ahead of point leader Faccinto, Bebereia, B Main winner Stidham, Worth, Ferris, Nelson and Schriver.

There were 11 Bandit cars with Warmerdam the fastest at 16.059. Manhire ran a 16.152. Greg Porte was third fast at 16.413, Matt Day ran a 16.583 and point leader A J Burgin a 16.607. After winning the last Bandit race in Perris, Mike Martin made the long tow from Yuma, AZ to give the 3/8 mile clay oval in Hanford a try. Warmerdam beat Martin in heat 1 and Manhire took heat 2 with Josh Davis second. In the all green 20 lap feature for the class, Warmerdam completed his perfect night with a win ahead of Manhire, Davis, Burgin, Porte, Brian Schuler, Martin and Day.

The Hot Stocks had a 19 car turnout, but the preliminary action took it's toll with Steve Cargill done in hot laps and the heat action putting Tom Manzella, Kenny Eskew and Shawn Fromme on the trailer early. Ken Noland won heat 1 ahead of Paul Pelleiter, Bryan Burnes took heat 2 with Tony Contente second and Rich Denman won the third heat in front of C Fromme. In the 20 lap main, it was patient C Fromme on top with Tarr second ahead of Johnny Cardoza, Ron Hurt, Claudine Contente, Pelletier, Noland and J T Contente. All four Contente's finished in the top ten as T Contente was 9th ahead of Joaquin Contente.
