FACCINTO, WARMERDAM AND JOHNSON STAY RED HOT
by Gary Jacob

Winged 360 Sprint Cars, Unwinged 360 Sprint Cars and IMCA Modifieds

Hanford, CA -June 17, 2000--Monte Faccinto got around Craig Stidham on lap 26 to win the 30 lap feature for the California Rebel Cup winged 360 sprint cars Saturday night at Kings Speedway. It was the third straight win for the defending series point champion and Stidham was a strong second ahead of Tim Worth. Only fast time eluded Jerome Warmerdam in the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint action as he won their 20 lap feature for the fifth time in 7 tries this season. He timed second fast and won his heat while fast timer and heat winner A J Burgin took a wild ride off the end of the track with a stuck throttle. Gene Manhire finished second. Mike Johnson from Clovis continued to be the hottest IMCA Modified racer in the Central Valley with his third straight Kings Speedway win. He also won Friday night in Chowchilla and has five wins in 7 Hanford starts this year. Johnson has won 12 times in 2000 in his Larkins Chassis. Out of the point race at his home track, Merced Speedway champion Paul Stone elected to run Kings and ran second to Johnson for the second night of the weekend.

The Rebel Sprint Cars had a 20 car field and Luke Bebereia posted fast time honors with his 15.065 lap as Lawrence Edlund ran a 15.092. Keith Day ran a 15.275 and rookie Stan Yockey was fourth fast at 15.435. Faccinto settled for sixth fast behind Tim Worth. Bebereia won the first heat ahead of Garrett Ishii, Worth beat Edlund in heat 2 and Faccinto won the third heat in front of Day. Stidham started outside front row in the 30 lapper and took a quick lead over pole starter Erik Folger. Faccinto passed Stidham for the lead with a slide job in turn 4 on lap 10 only to have a caution flag nullify the move. Stidham then paced the event until he got too high as he was working lapped traffic on lap 26. This gave Faccinto the opening he needed and he raced underneath Stidham for the lead and the win. Stidham ran second ahead of Worth, Bebereia, Kurt Nelson, Day, Shane Travoli, Folger and Yockey.

The Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars had a 13 car field and series point leader Burgin was the fastest in time trials with a 16.200 lap as Warmerdam ran a 16.368. The only other cars to break into the 16's were Manhire with a 16.820 and Matt Day at 16.998. Burgin won the first heat over Jason Yount and Warmerdam was the second heat winner in front of Josh Davis. Warmerdam had crashed at the previous race and just got the car back together earlier in the afternoon. He took the lead from Burgin on lap 12 and a lap later, Burgin took a wild ride off the top of turn 1 when his throttle stuck. Manhire chased Warmerdam to the win with Davis third ahead of Brian Schuler, Yount, Brad Evett and Keith Silva.

Johnson is the IMCA Modified point leader in Hanford and also paces the points at the unsanctioned Chowchilla track. The IMCA Modifieds had a 20 car field and Wayne Coffman beat Jeff Heusdens in heat 1. Heat 2 saw Johnson the winner ahead of Joe Chapman and P Stone. Chad Patterson took heat 3 with Gary Pugh second. With visitors like Stone and Ventura's Steve Greenland making the heat cut, Johnson started 9th in the 20 lap grid rather than his usual 12th. He had the lead in 7 laps and won by a full straight over Stone with Tom Bowser in third. Greenland took the checkered flag in fourth, but was disqualified when he failed to stop in the claim area after the race. This gave Chapman fourth ahead of Jimmy Reeves, Ray Arena, Allen Ennis and Richard Vandersteen. Both Eddie Stewart and Lee Phillips were feature scratches.
