Bakersfield, CA -June 10, 2000--After leading all 20
laps to win the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car feature, veteran racer
Gene Manhire climbed the front wall and nearly flipped to put an
exciting end to the event Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway Park.
Defending series champion Jarrett Chaney has moved into SCRA unwinged
410 action in 2000, but he returned to the Bandit Series and ran
second to Manhire as he gained the spot when current point leader A J
Burgin got into the wall to force the final yellow flag on lap 16.
Josh Davis from Atascadero finished third.
The Bandit sprint cars brought just an 8 car field to Bakersfield's
1/3 mile clay oval and the first car to time, Chaney posted fast time
honors with his 13.452 lap to edge the 13.471 of late qualifier
Burgin. Davis ran a 13.746, Matt Day a 13.889 and Manhire a 13.890.
Day and Chaney ended up with front row starts for their heat when
rookie Keith Silva and first timer Steve Scheidt started in the rear.
Chaney won the heat ahead of Day and long time modified midget racer
Scheidt. Manhire beat Burgin in the other heat race. Silva trailered
before the 20 lap main to leave a 7 car grid. Manhire raced into the
lead with Jason Yount into second ahead of Burgin and Davis. Burgin
took second from Yount on lap 3 and Davis was third a lap later.
Chaney passed both Day and Yount for fourth on lap 9. Burgin's strong
run ended when he got into the wall for a lap 16 yellow flag. Chaney
had passed Davis for third on lap 14 and he inherited second. Chaney
chased Manhire to the win with Davis third ahead of Young, Day and
Scheidt. Manhire clipped the front wall just before the checkered
flag, then nearly flipped when he climbed the barrier after taking the
checkered flag.
