WARMERDAM AND BOWSER ADD HANFORD WINS
by Gary Jacob

Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds, Hot Stocks and Champ Trucks

Hanford, CA -August 28, 1999--Jerome Warmerdam fought off the challenges of defending series champion Danny Sheridan and current series point leader Jarrett Chaney to win Saturday nights 30 lap main for the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars at Kings Speedway. In a tight duel with track point leader Jimmy Reeves and Bob Hotchkiss, Tom Bowser of Tulare won the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature. Battling his way around J T Contente, Shawn Fromme was the winner of the Hot Stock 20 lap main. The Champ Trucks that normally run at Perris Auto Speedway made their first ever visit to Kings Speedways 3/8 mile clay oval and Billy Griffin followed up his recent Bakersfield win with a clean sweep of the Hanford action in Ken Hobsons potent truck. It was built from a former Mike Collins dirt late model.

The Bandit sprint car field rebounded to the 16 car level and Chaney posted fast time with his 16.186 lap. Gene Manhire turned a 16.324 effort and Warmerdam was third fast at 16.392. Mike Downing won the first heat ahead of Warmerdam and Chaney. In the second heat, it was Bobby Elliott on top of fellow coastal racer Sheridan and Manhire. All 16 cars started their 30 lap main and Brenden Olsen led the first 9 laps with Warmerdam running second ahead of Manhire. On lap 10, Manhire tried to pull off a slide job pass on Olsen, but slams hard into the side of Olsen and rear-ends Chad Gillihan. Gillihan had to be transported to the hospital to be checked out and Olsen, Manhire and Gillihan joined early dropouts Charlie Ekiss and Josh Davis on the sidelines. After a red flag, the restart sees Warmerdam leading Sheridan and Downing. Chaney gained third on lap 13, but he could only chase winner Warmerdam and runnerup Sheridan to the checkered flag. A J Burgin ran fourth ahead of Downing, Elliott, Matt Day, Greg Porte and Brian Schuler.

The early action was tough on the 21 car IMCA Modified turnout as both Gerald Russell and visitor Bob Diaz were done in hot laps. Problems in the heat action added Eddie Stewart and Tom Stidham to the feature scratch list. Heat winners were Loren DeArmond, Reeves and Hotchkiss. Hank Silva led the first lap of the 20 lapper ahead of Bowser and Mike Cotta. On lap 5, Bowser took the lead from Silva with Joe Chapman and DeArmond dueling for third. Chapman stalled for a lap 6 yellow. DeArmond spun for the second yellow of the race. At the midway mark, Bowser led Silva, Hotchkiss, Reeves and Steve Smothermon. On lap 16, Hotchkiss took over second, but got stuck in traffic on lap 18 and lost ground to leader Bowser. Reeves was able to make a late pass around Hotchkiss to finish second as Bowser won. Hotchkiss was third ahead of Silva, Smothermon, Ed Nichols, Chapman and DeArmond.

The addition of six new cars grew the Hot Stock count to 16 cars. Heat winners were Craig Fromme and Aaron Revious with Shawn Fromme a strong second to Revious. At the beginning of their 20 lap main, J T Contente led C Fromme, sister Claudine Contente, father Joaquin Contente and Revious. By lap 3, S Fromme had advanced to third. On a lap 6 restart, S Fromme took second from C Contente. S Fromme used lapped traffic to take the lead from J T Contente on lap 10, but a yellow nullified that lap. It took until lap 12 for S Fromme to duplicate the pass to gain the lead officially. A red flag on lap 14 left Richard Yarborough with a badly damaged car. On the restart, S Fromme led J T Contente, C Contente, Joaquin Contente and Ron Hurt. S Fromme fought off a late challenge from J T Contente for the win with C Contente third. Hurt was able to get around Joaquin Contente for fourth as Joaquin settled for fifth ahead of Dave Bush, Revious and Delbert Turnmire. Jay Jones led the new cars with a 9th ahead of Joey Salazar.

The Champ Trucks brought an 8 truck field north for their first visit to Kings. Griffin won the heat race ahead of Danny Ent, Rick Becker and Dale Underwood. Ent was again driving the Gary Sigman PRE entry. In the main, it was Griffin winning easily in front of Art Peterson, Dino Napier and Underwood as Becker, David Jackson, David Schuyler and Ent were all early dropouts.
