Bakersfield, CA -August 21, 1999--In a near repeat of
the last visit by the Bandit unwinged 360 sprint cars to Bakersfield
Speedway Park, Jerome Warmerdam staged a duel with point leader
Jarrett Chaney and used an inside pass on lap 23 to win their 25 lap
main for a $700 payoff. Chaney was second and Davey Pombo Jr returned
to Bandit action with a third ahead of Brenden Olsen. The battle for
the IMCA Modified track championship had a dramatic turn as incoming
point leader Kevin Nichols was unable to make repairs after an early
tangle and chief challenger Jeff Miller won his second 20 lap main to
emerge as the point leader with just one point race left. Miller holds
an 11 point lead over Wayne Coffman, who used a third to also move
past Kevin Nichols. Kevin Nichols is 12 out of the lead.
The Bandit Sprint Cars brought an 11 car field and Chaney was fast
timer with his 13.623 lap as Pombo ran 13.831, Olsen 13.842 and
Warmerdam a 13.868. The field was divided into two heats and Pombo won
his from last starting. Outside front row starter Josh Davis won the
second heat. The six car inversion for the 25 lap main saw Davis and
Larry Brown sharing the front row. Brown pushed his borrowed car into
the lead and he paced the first two laps. Chaney started sixth, but
was second on lap 1 ahead of Davis. Chaney took the lead from Brown on
lap 3 and Warmerdam raced into third. A J Burgin gained fourth on lap
5, but lost the spot to Pombo on lap 13. Warmerdam had just secured
second from Brown prior to the first caution flag on lap 16. Pombo
took third from Brown on the restart and briefly lost the spot to
Olsen only to regain it on a lap 21 restart. Warmerdam got underneath
leader Chaney on lap 23 and paced the final three laps for the win.
Pombo was third ahead of Olsen, Burgin, Brown, Davis and Warren
Dorathy.
With a few visiting Ventura Raceway cars, the IMCA Modifieds had a
20 car field and it was divided into three heat races. Fourth starter
Steve Smothermon won heat one, fifth starter Kevin Nichols heat two
and outside front row starter Dave Sweet heat three. Jim Keister
pitted on a pace lap to leave the feature with 19 starters. Comeback
driver Kelly Nichols started on the pole and led the first 6 laps
before Smothermon spun for the first caution flag. On the restart,
Kelly Nichols spun and ensuing tangle saw Kevin Nichols car heavily
damaged. Unable to make repairs, Kevin Nichols settled for the 18th
place finish just ahead of Sweet. Kenneth Clevland spun and Ventura
pony stock star Mark Fullerton stalled. When another lap was finally
scored, Smothermon had climbed all the way back to 2nd ahead of Bill
Gates and Jack Parker raced into fourth on lap 9. Smothermon was
making an inside groove run on leader Miller when Clevland again spun
to force the final caution on lap 16. Coffman was now third ahead of
Gates and Parker. Ventura rookie star Mike Furlong made a late charge
into fifth as Miller won in front of Smothermon, Coffman, Furlong,
Parker, Gates, Lin Deines and Chris Mendenhall.
