Hanford, CA -August 7, 1999--After an incident with a
lapped car sent Gene Manhire sliding off the end of the track in turn
1 on lap 24, Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car point leader Jarrett
Chaney paced the final 2 laps to win their 25 lap main event at Kings
Speedway. Jerome Warmerdam ran second ahead of Bobby Elliott. Chad
Patterson continued his strong season in the IMCA Modifieds by
outrunning Tom Bowser to win their 20 lap main. Johnny Cardoza passed
both Aaron Revious and Delbert Turnmire on lap 15 to win the 20 lap
Hot Stock main event. Cardoza is the only driver who is splitting his
time between the Hanford Hot Stocks and Tulare Thunderstocks in 1999.
The unwinged 360 Bandit sprint cars had a 13 car field, but former
point leader Brenden Olsen saw his night end in hot laps as his recent
bad luck continued. Chaney posted fast time with his 16.288 lap on the
3/8 mile clay oval. Gene Manhire ran 16.412 and Warmerdam a 16.584.
Danny Sheridan was in a borrowed car and timed fourth fast. Elliott
won the first heat ahead of Mike Downing. In the second heat, Manhire
won with Josh Davis second ahead of Bobby Davis Jr. Chad Gillihan was
also a feature scratch to leave an 11 car field. At the beginning of
their 25 lapper, Downing led Elliott, Manhire and Chaney. Downing ran
off the end of the track for the first caution on lap 2. Manhire was
the leader on lap 4 with Chaney in second. By the midrace mark,
Warmerdam was running third behind Manhire and Chaney. On lap 24,
Manhires attempt to pass a slower car sent him sliding off turn 1 to
force the final yellow flag. Manhire restarted in the rear and Chaney
won ahead of Warmerdam, Elliott, A J Burgin and Manhire with Larry
Dietz sixth ahead of Sheridan and Davis.
Another big field of IMCA Modifieds saw 28 cars in the pits, but
Bakersfield point title hopeful Jeff Miller broke a rear end in hot
laps and scratched for the night. The cars were divided into three
heats and heat winners were Loren DeArmond, Bowser and Patterson.
Bowser led early in the main ahead of Patterson and Scott Pruett.
While Bowser and Patterson dueled for the lead, Steve Smothermon, Bob
Hotchkiss and point leader Jimmy Reeves climbed into the top five.
After a final caution flag on lap 14, Patterson pulled away to win
ahead of Bowser with Hotchkiss third ahead of Reeves and S Smothermon.
Pruett was sixth ahead of Joe Chapman, Ray Arena, Rodney Freitas and
Brian Ipock. Kenny Neu visited with a 13th. The main had 25 starters
as both Tom Stidham and Jason Pugh were scratches.
The Hot Stocks had a 12 car field and heat winners were Richard
Yarborough and Cardoza. In the main event, Aaron Revious raced into
the lead ahead of Yarborough and Delbert Turnmire. By lap 5, Shawn
Fromme had climbed into fourth. On lap 11, a three wide move with S
Fromme, Yarborough and Claudine Contente saw Fromme spinning after
contact from C Contente. The yellow flys with Revious still leading
Yarborough, Turnmire and Cardoza. On lap 13, both Turnmire and Cardoza
get around Yarborough. On lap 15, Cardoza passes both Turnmire and
Revious with an outside groove run on the backstretch. Cardoza led the
rest of the way for his first Kings win of 1999 as Turnmire ran second
ahead of Ron Hurt, Yarborough, Joaquin Contente, C Contente and S
Fromme. J T Contente was a feature scratch.
