Hanford, CA -June 19, 1999--Third fast timer Danny
Sheridan from Santa Maria used just five laps to climb from his
outside front row starting spot into the lead in Saturday nights 25
lap Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car feature at Kings Speedway and the
defending series champion raced to a $750 win with Jerome Warmerdam
chasing him to the checkered flag. A wild last lap of action in the
IMCA Modified feature saw a checkered-red finish and Loren DeArmond
was awarded his first ever feature win in this class. Earlier this
season, DeArmond thought he had watched his season go up in smoke as
his trailer caught fire towing home. He was able to purchase Chris
Hamiltons car to finish the 1999 season and received many parts
donations. Shawn Fromme won his second 20 lap Hot Stock feature of
1999.
The Bandit sprint cars had a 14 car turnout and previous week
Oildale winner Jarrett Chaney posted fast time honors at 16.055 as
Larry Dietz ran a 16.270. Sheridan, who hopes to find sponsorship to
advance into a Spec Truck program on pavement, was third fast at
16.285 as Warmerdam ran a 16.346. Heat winners were Sheridan and Gene
Manhire. The invert six lineup at the front of the feature field put
Manhire and division point leader Brenden Olsen on the front row with
Warmerdam and Sheridan in row 2. Fast timers Chaney and Dietz started
in row 3. Warmerdam and Olsen exchanged the lead three times over
those first four rounds before the second and final caution flag of
the race slowed the action. Sheridan took the lead from Warmerdam on
this restart and was never headed. Warmerdam ran a strong second and
Davey Pombo Jr was third ahead of Manhire, A J Burgin, Chaney, Olsen,
Dietz and Matt Day. Josh Davis was a feature scratch.
There were 25 IMCA Modifieds in the pits and they were divided into
three heats. Heat victories went to the vastly improved Chad
Patterson, Mike Johnson and Jimmy Reeves. DeArmond gained the lead on
lap 8 and paced the field through lap 18. Jimmy Reeves took command at
the white flag with Rodney Freitas into second ahead of DeArmond.
Reeves had problems on that final round and DeArmond was slightly
ahead of Merceds Rodney Freitas as they exited turn 4. They made
contact and Freitas crashed hard into the front wall. Flagman Marty
Verhoeven threw a red flag-checkered flag combination with DeArmond
awarded the win ahead of Patterson, returning racer Lonnie Lacy Jr,
Ray Arena, point leader Steve Smothermon, Bob Hotchkiss, Reeves and Ed
Nichols as Freitas was awarded 13th. The race had 8 different yellow
or red flag stops.
The Hot Stocks had a 13 car turnout and heat victories went to
Aaron Revious and returning racer Johnny Cardoza. Cardoza has been
limiting himself to Tulares Thunderbowl Raceway, but they are in a
long break in their schedule and he returned to Kings Speedway.
Revious lined up on the pole for the feature and paced the first two
laps, but heavy smoke billowing from his mount made for dangerous
conditions and he was blackflagged off the track. Shawn Fromme raced
to the win ahead of Cardoza, Dave Bush, his father Craig Fromme, J T
Contente, Ron Hurt and Joaquin Contente. Both Tom Sagmiller and
Richard Yarborough were feature scratches.
