DEFENDING BANDIT CHAMPION SHERIDAN WINS AT KINGS
by Gary Jacob

Bandit Sprint Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Hot Stocks

Hanford, CA -June 5, 1999--Defending Bandit unwinged 360 sprint car champion Danny Sheridan from Santa Maria led the final 23 laps to win their 30 lap main event at Kings Speedway Saturday night. In 1999, Sheridan is spliting his time between the Bandit sprint cars and the IMCA sprint cars that race at his home track as he tries to put together a Spec Truck race team. Former NASCAR Grand American Modified racer Chad Patterson continues to make his presence felt at the 3/8 mile clay oval as he won his second 20 lap main event after earlier winning his heat. The 20 lap Hot Stock main event was run without a caution flag as Shawn Fromme won with J T Contente second.

The Bandit sprint cars had a 16 car turnout and time trials were very competitive as Jarrett Chaney turned a 16.282 lap, Sheridan a 16.290 and Jerome Warmerdam a 16.328. Chaney then won his heat race ahead of Mike Downing with Sheridan the winner of heat two ahead of series point leader Brenden Olsen. Rookie Southern California long tow Randy Thornell had a hard crash in the second heat and scratched from the main along with John Iturreira. Brian Schuler led the first two laps of the main event, but slipped off the track in turn 2 to force a yellow flag. Mike Downing then led, but Olsen took over on lap 8. Before Olsen could finish that lap, a pop from his engine saw him slow with Sheridan the new leader over Chaney and Downing. By lap 25, Warmerdam was running third and a lap 26 yellow setup a four lap shootout for the win. Another caution on lap 27, but Sheridan got a huge jump on the final green and easily won the 30 lapper ahead of Warmerdam, Gene Manhire, Chaney, Olsen, Downing and Ken Coulston.

The IMCA Modifieds had a 21 car turnout and they were divided into three heat races. Rookie Tom Stidham won heat one and Patterson was on top in heat two. Despite contact with Rex Tyler on the final lap, Tom Bowser was first at the checkered flag of his heat. After the checkered flag, Bowser slammed into Tyler and the officials parked Bowser for the night. That gave the heat win to point leader Bob Williamson. Bob Hotchkiss had moved into second in points with his recent win, but he was a no show tonight. In the main event, the Don Garrett car was leading by lap 5 with Patterson second ahead of Bob Williamson. Jason Pugh spun for the first yellow and Mike Johnson was involved in a tangle with Tyler and Loren DeArmond that nearly riped off the drivers side door on the Johnson car. Patterson took the lead from Garrett car on lap 12 and Jimmy Reeves was now third. There was a lap 15 red flag for a fire on the Rodney Freitas car. After his earlier problem, Johnson had climbed back to third when he had to pit with a flat tire on a lap 18 yellow flag. Patterson led the final 9 laps for the win. In the claim area, the officials found that Bowser had sneaked into the Garrett car and was driving it. They disqualified that car and suspended Bowser. This gave Reeves second ahead of double division racer Ed Nichols, San Joses Joe Chapman, Tyler, Eddie Stewart and Johnson.

The Hot Stocks had a 13 car field and heat winners were previous feature winner Delbert Turnmire and defending champion Joaquin Contente. In that second heat, Tom Sagmiller spun and was hit hard by Ron Hurt. Everyone was able to start the 20 lap main and S Fromme took command on lap 13. He spent the final 8 laps working lapped traffic as he pulled away from second place finisher J T Contente. Joaquin Contente was third ahead of S Fromme, Turnmire, Aaron Revious and Dave Bush.
