ASCS Canyon Region Back at Manzanita this Saturday! |

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 5, 2008) – Desert heat or not, the wingless forces of the Discount Tire Co. American Sprint Car Series Canyon Region are back in action this Saturday night when the series takes to Manzanita Speedway's 1/3-mile clay oval. The only thing hotter than the recent Arizona weather had been reigning series champion Jeremy Sherman of Surprise, AZ, who was riding a four-race win streak. That is, until the series most recent event, when Buckeye's Charles Davis, Jr., vanquished the series points leader by notching his fifth overall victory of the season aboard the familiar Massey Motorsports No. 50 DRC. With the triumph, Davis kept Sherman within 80 points and earned a bit of breathing room between himself and third-ranked Nathan High of Goodyear, who is 80 markers behdind Davis in third. The battle for third on back is tight, as High is just two points ahead of Yuma's Mike Martin, with Phoenix ace R.J. Johnson just another six points back in fifth. Peoria's Josh Pelkey enters Saturday's action ranked sixth, with Andrew Reinbold (Chandler), Mike Leslie (Litchfield Park), Justin Fisher (Glendale) and Thomas Ogle (Goodyear) completing the current top ten. Saturday's event also serves as a final tune-up for at least several teams that will be making their way "back east" for the Annual O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless Midwest swing, which gets under way next Monday night in Wheatland, MO. Mike Leslie and R.J. Johnson are expected to be in TNT action, as will Charles Davis, Jr., who is expected to once again team with Iowa's Mark Swanson for the week of TNT racing. Certificates will be awarded to each of Saturday night's heat race winners, with Racing Optics sponsoring heat race one, MPD Race Products sponsoring heat race two, Winters Performance sponsoring heat race three and Sunoco sponsoring heat race four. Arizona Race Mart sponsors the Trophy Dash, while Sunoco will also award a certificate to each "B" Main winner in ASCS Canyon Region action this year. Parker Store sponsors the Roll for Inversion. Saturday's Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region action at Manzanita Speedway is set to go green at 7:30 p.m. Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. ASCS Canyon Region brings the best in non-wing Sprint Car racing to Arizona with a full slate of 29 nights of racing in 2008. In addition to events atop both the ½-mile and 1/3-mile ovals at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, the series will also be in action at Tucson's USA Race Park and Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway over the course of the season.
